Mold needs moisture to grow. These are the checks that catch most moisture problems before they turn into mold problems.
- Check under sinks, around toilets, and behind appliances monthly for slow leaks
- Keep indoor humidity below 50% — run exhaust fans during and after showers and cooking
- Make sure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans vent outside, not into the attic
- Inspect the attic and roof after major storms for signs of leaks
- Clean gutters and downspouts twice a year, and make sure they direct water away from the foundation
- Check the AC condensate drain line for clogs, especially in summer
- Keep an eye on window seals and caulking, and re-caulk when you see gaps
- Address any water intrusion within 24–48 hours — that’s the window before mold growth typically begins
- Check crawl spaces and basements for standing water or musty odors seasonally
- Don’t store cardboard boxes directly on concrete floors or against exterior walls
